TEA-Lauryl Sulfate is an effective, but harsher surfactant than others that we use in our day to day shampoos. We only use it on our Build-up be gone shampoo, which is only meant to be used once or twice a month. When used in this capacity, this is a great ingredient, as it’s being used for what it was created for. This should never be used in an every day shampoo as it will strip natural oils from your hair and potentially irritate the scalp. Used in a deep detox shampoo, it hits the nail on the head, but should be avoided in any everyday shampoo.
When you hear the word sulfate everyone thinks oh no! But very few people know there are good sulfates and nasty sulfates. The nasty sulfates usually comprise of sodium-lauryl sulphate (SLS) which is found in most off the shelf every day shampoos. These kinds of sulfates damage the hair and strip it of all the natural oils your hair needs to maintain a healthy shaft and cuticle. You find SLS in laundry detergents, spray cleaners and dishwasher detergents. So essentially it is like putting fairy liquid in your hair!
Now on to the good stuff. TEA-Lauryl Sulfate is a non nasty sulfate. This is a more gentle and less damaging surfactant on the hair. It helps to rid every day build-up such as smog, hard water and hairsprays etc. We recommend using this once or twice a month as to not disturb or disrupt your natural hair sebum. There is such thing as over cleaning. Clarifying your hair too much can be just as damaging as using SLS.
